I feel privileged and honored to be here with you this morning as we celebrate the Fourth Anniversary of the Entry into Force of the Convention on Cluster Munitions or in short, the CCM. As the documentary shown here today clearly demonstrates, no country has felt more deeply the devastating impact of cluster munitions than the Lao PDR.
One Day at a Time – Alexandra on the Bombie Trail is produced by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Lao PDR in collaboration with the National Regulatory Authority for the UXO/Mine Action Sector (NRA), the Lao National UXO Programme (UXO Lao) and the Lao New Wave Cinema Productions. The film is being launched today in Vientiane as part of an event to mark the fourth anniversary of the Convention on Cluster Munitions entering into force in 2010.
Vientiane –The 2014 Human Development Report titled “Sustaining Human Progress: Reducing Vulnerabilities and Building Resilience” shows that the overall global trend in human development is positive, including in the Lao PDR. However, persistent vulnerability threatens human development worldwide, and unless the risk is systematically addressed, progress will be neither equitable nor sustainable.
Vientiane, 30th June 2014 – The legislative, oversight and representational role of the National Assembly will receive a boost over the next year through a new support project launched today in Vientiane.

An international conference on adaptation to climate change in the agricultural sector opened today in Vientiane. Lao PDR, one of the poorest countries in Asia, is also one of the world’s most heavily bombed places. Up to 30 percent of the 270 million cluster sub-munitions dropped during the Indochina conflict, along with other ordnance, did not detonate at the time of use. Today, much of it remains in the ground, killing dozens of Lao people each year through accidents, making land inaccessible, affecting food security, livelihoods and economic development, and preventing many from escaping poverty.

Vientiane 5th February 2014 – The community radio coverage has doubled in the past year in Lao PDR, with four stations now broadcasting to more than 110,000 people in Xieng Khuang and Sekong provinces. However, a recent evaluation has raised concerns about the quality of the current programming.

Mr. Choummaly Xayasone, President of Lao PDR, on the results of the 11th High Level Round Table Meeting (HL RTM) held on 19 November 2013, which featured what they called “a very interactive, frank and fruitful discussion.”
The 11th High Level Round Table Meeting on 19 November focused on ways to deliver on Lao PDR's development priorities by 2015 while also setting the fundamental path for achieving longer-term goals. It brought together more than 400 participants from the Government of Lao PDR and Development Partners as well as the private sector and civil society organizations in high-quality policy dialogue.

An exhibition featuring development cooperation activities between the Government of Lao PDR and its partners as well as a display of MDG-themed pictures was opened today at the National Convention Centre in Vientiane. The Development Exhibition was opened by H.E. Mr. Thongloun Sisoulith, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Haoliang Xu, UN Assistant Secretary-General, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific and H.E. Mr. Somdy Douangdy, Minister of Planning and Investment.
Vientiane, 15 November 2013- The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will continue to support the UXO sector in Lao PDR through a new project designed to further strengthen the Government’s capacity to tackle the persisting UXO problem in the country.
