Shaping a sustainable future, togetherJul 10, 2017
“Having a goal isn’t wishing. It isn’t a faint hope or a vague dream that someday we’ll have or do or be. No, having a goal is much, much more” – this is the opening message of a new film, titled This is Development: The Sustainable Development Goals in Lao PDR. The film was released today by the United Nations in Lao PDR, showing how the people of Laos pursue their goals and dreams, committed with hearts and minds.
The inspiring film opens with the unique sound of a temple drum and introduces Dee Sao Lao, a 16-year-old kickboxing champion from Vientiane, and shows how she passionately works towards reaching her goals, without fear of setbacks, fiercely focused on what she wants to achieve. We then meet and hear from people from all walks of life in Lao PDR who are committed to realising their dreams. Filmed entirely in Lao PDR, the film’s imagery is as captivating as the characters, capturing the natural beauty of the country along with the deep desire of a determined people to achieve a brighter future for themselves and their country.
The film’s premiere coincides with the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development held in New York City on July 10-19, a United Nations central platform that reviews the progress on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development annually, with this year’s theme being "Eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world". The core of the 2030 Agenda are the Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs, a set of 17 global goals, adopted by all United Nations Member States to help shift the world onto the path towards a sustainable future, leaving no one behind.
A delegation of Lao PDR’s political leadership, including Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Thongphane Savanphet, Director General of the Ministry of Planning & Investment’s International Cooperation Department Ms. Sisomboun Ounavoung and the Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Department of International Organisations Mr. Anouparb Vongkorneo are participating in the High-Level Political Forum.
