The logo for the Lao specific Millennium Development Goal 9, to reduce the impact of UXO, has been presented at a ceremony celebrating the 2nd Anniversary of the Entry into Force of the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM), held at the National Cultural Hall in Vientiane on 1 August.

The design symbolizes a UXO accident survivor and the red color alerts people to the danger of unexploded ordnance, while cluster munitions surround the survivor highlighting the impact of UXO on development. The logo was selected from more than 100 applications to the MDG 9 logo competition by a committee of representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Regulatory Authority for the UXO/Mine Action Sector (NRA), UXO Lao and UNDP.

According to the committee, it was chosen because the design simply and clearly shows the damage that has been caused by UXO and highlights the national development goal to ‘reduce the impact of UXO.'

The designer of the winning logo is 43-year old Mr. Sithideth Soukhathammavong, from Vientiane Capital. Mr. Sithideth was inspired by his experience in the Northern Provinces where he used to work and saw many people missing a limb because of UXO accidents.

”I am proud to contribute to the work of addressing UXO issues as a witness of the problem. I hope the design will help convey the message to the international commununity as to how much Lao people are suffering from UXO contamination and how it is blocking the development of our country,” he said.

On the ceremony of the 2nd Anniversary of the Entry into Force of the CCM, Ms. Kyoko Yokosuka, UNDP Resident Representative a.i. congratulated the adoption of the MDG 9 logo and stated that, "Achieving the Lao specific MDG9 on UXO will have a multiplier effect on paving the way for achieving the other MDGs by 2015 and for the country's graduation from Least Developed Country status by 2020.”

She also praised the Lao Government's commitment to solving the UXO issue and highlighted the importance of further international support and strong partnerships among the international community to accelerate efforts in reducing the impact of UXO.

MDG 9 – Reduce the impact of UXO, sets three targets:

• Target 9A: Ensure the complete clearance of UXO from priority / high value agricultural land by 2020.

•  Target 9B: Reduce substantially the number of casualties as a result of UXO incidents

•  Target 9C: Ensure that the medical and rehabilitation needs of all UXO survivors are met in line with treaty obligations under the Convention on Cluster Munitions
