Exhibition showcases development cooperation and achievementsNov 18, 2013
Vientiane, 18 November 2013 –An exhibition featuring development cooperation activities between the Government of Lao PDR and its partners as well as a display of MDG-themed pictures was opened today at the National Convention Centre in Vientiane. The Development Exhibition was opened by H.E. Mr. Thongloun Sisoulith, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Haoliang Xu, UN Assistant Secretary-General, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific and H.E. Mr. Somdy Douangdy, Minister of Planning and Investment.
The development exhibition is organized as part of the 11th High-level Round Table Meeting taking place on 20 November 2013 in Vientiane. Its main objective is to reflect the partnership and collaborations between the Government and its development partners through the Sector Working Group mechanism in the implementation of the National Socio-Economic Development Plan towards the achievements of the country’s development agenda, in particular the Achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015 and the Least Developed Country (LDC) status by 2020.
Work will be displayed from the various Sector Working Groups, including Macroeconomic, Trade and Private Sector Development, Education, Health, Infrastructure, Governance, Agriculture and Rural Development, Illicit Drug Control, UXO, Natural Resource Management and Environment. Additionally, there are booths for gender-related work as well as for the Round Table Process on strengthening partnerships for effective development cooperation.
The pictures included in the MDG photo exhibition are selected from submissions to the ‘Laos in Focus – picturing the MDGs’ photo competition launched in September. As part of the opening ceremony, awards for the contest winners were also presented.
‘Laos in Focus – picturing the MDGs’ photo competition was launched in September by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UN in Lao PDR to mark the publication of the Lao MDG progress report. It aimed to focus on the key development issues in Lao PDR and to raise awareness of the MDGs particularly among the young people. The winning photo was taken by Siththisak Phaninhuan, and the runner-ups were Midphasong Mingnakhone and Thipphakone Manyvong. The winning photos from mobile photo category for young people category were taken by Dethnaphonexay Xoumphonepakdee and Khamla Sonenapha.
The two-day exhibition will remain open for general public for on 18 November but access on the 19 November will be restricted to the Round Table Meeting delegates only.
