As part of the UNDP Community Radio project, or Enhancing People's Participation Through Community Radio (EPPCR), with the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism (MICT) and in collaboration with Nam Theun 2 Power Company Limited (NTPC), a training to promote volunteers’ community radio programming was conducted between 11-12 August 2021, in Nakai District, and was facilitated by the Lao Youth Union (LYU). The training helped volunteers in promoting their radio programmes for increased potential funding opportunities, which in turn could help build the sustainability of their local community radio station.

The volunteers showed huge interest in the training and were very keen to learn and use their new skills. These included speaking skills, collaboration with other radio programmers, interview techniques with social influencers, and the use of social media like Facebook.

The training was part of a pilot being run by UNDP and MICT to also benefit the other 11 radio stations under the Community Radio project across the country. Ultimately, the Community Radio project aims to promote greater local exchange of information through radio programming targeting the needs of local communities, including in local languages, to help address local development issues. This will help many communities in localizing the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 through greater access and exchange of information.
